Kellyist Mason Brown will be playing a house concert this Sunday with multi-instrumentalist Doug Goodhart at Big Plain House Concerts in Lenexa. This is a fancy way of saying they’ll be playing at Turlach and Katherine Boylan’s house. Anyhow, you’ll need to make a reservation either by phone at 913-620-1821 or via email to concerts_AT_bigplain_dot_com. More details here.

The Kansas City School Of Irish Music is holding a recital tomorrow at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center. At first glance, this might not seem Kelly related but Turlach and Dave are instructors and our eponymous Kelly is the event coordinator. Drop in, spread the love.

Once upon a time there was a Kansas City band called Scartaglen. They had a big following and toured all over the country. Dave Agee and Mike Dugger, co-conspirators in Kelly, were founding members of Scartaglen. From a post on Irish KC I learned that there’s a podcast from Mike O’Laughlin that explores the genesis of Scartaglen and the development of an Irish music scene in Kansas City. I guess that means Dave and Mike are historical figures.

“Just wanted to give ‘Kelly’ a thanks for a great performance. You all are awesome and in my humble opinion the most talented group that performed at the festival. You’ve got a loyal fan with me and I know others will be jumpin’ on the fan ‘band’ wagon.
One of my favorite Irish blessings goes like this: ‘May you never forget what’s worth remembering, or remember what’s best forgotten.’
I know ‘Kelly’ is sure worth rememberin’ and as always I will pass the word to catch your performances.”

Hey -
I enjoyed the show Saturday night. Thank you. I can see everybody’s put lots of work into the band and I’m eager to check the first CD as everything unfolds.

Not much progress to report. Most of the usual suspects have been busy, out of town with March gigs. Mike, Mason and Turlach are headed to Tennessee for a while to play in Dollywood.

Well, it’s happened. The CD has finally started the long progress of recording. It’s been 3 weeks now and nothing is complete, but I’m optimistic. I go in on Friday and lay down some vocals for two songs. After that, one more track on each and they should be complete, unless we decide to add additional tracks. So 2 down and 12 to go!!
The first two songs are “Black is the Colour” and “Hired Hands” which is a rewrite of a trad Scottish piece called the “Ploy Boy Lads”. One is a love song of longing and the other is a “poor me” song. You may notice a theme through out my CD and it’s not consciously done, although after the last 2 years of my life I’m sure there is a lot of subconscious rolling around in there. So as a disclaimer, I don’t hate men (they’re better roasting on a stick…haha seriously just kidding here)! And to add to that I am working with some really fantastic men on my CD. I couldn’t have asked for a more talented group of musicians and consider myself lucky they even associate with me.
I’m hoping to have the CD done by June, but with all the gigs that we all do, some of which are taking bits and pieces of us out of town, I’m hoping for August. We’ll see what happens, so keep your fingers crossed!!
