Cafe &, & Then Some!!

Well if you weren’t there on Thursday you missed a great show. The weather was absolutely beautiful, the coffee was grand and we had a small but wonderfully attentive crowd who apparently thought $10 was not too much to pay to see live music in KC

All five of us were there on Thursday with each getting to show off their music “stuff”. Mason was having a bit of a day after a run in with a board and nail slightly punctured his cheek (he said it was something about trying to talk to John Kerry), spilling his fresh coffee (party foul) and breaking the brand new mic holder (he didn’t really break it, it was defective). However he came alive on stage and performed brilliantly along with the rest of the group (at least I think so, but then I’m a little on the biased side). Turlach was in rather good form with his dry wit and even though he thinks I’m normally too loud (haha), a big thanks from me to Mark Andruss for asking that I be turned up (so there!). Mike also sang beautifully and kept the group in good form as well as bringing two brand new mics for Turlach and Mason. And Dave was the hero of the night by not only delivering a flawless performance, but also by providing great sound (bad sound can be the death of a performance)!

We did some pieces that we have not yet done in front of an audience. One was Dave’s version of The Ploughboy and the Cockney which he came to by way of Tim Hart and Maddie Prior. The other piece was Brand New Song which was written by our host and proprietor, Mr. Eddie Delahunt! I was really pleased with our version of the piece and certainly hope that Eddie was too! The show ended with our version of a Dick Gaughan piece, World Turned Upside Down with the Greek tune, Karsilmas attached to the end.

A big thank you goes to Eddie for opening up his place, Cafe & (45th and State Line) to let us play! Another thank you goes to Bill O’Connor for having us on his show with KKFI 90.1 which supports local musicians like us! Thanks to Dan Regan and the KCIF blog for posting the show, thanks to Katherine (Turlach’s lovely wife and our official photographer) and Harold Scott (Jennifer Ireland Foundation) for helping with the door! And last, but not least a big thank you to the wonderful audience!

Despite our bashful attempts to hide in plain view, we were documented by several photographers during our Spinach Festival performances this past weekend. If you’ve been studying our calendar you’ll know that we’ll be playing at the Lenexa Spinach Festival this weekend with two performances sponsored by the Lenexa Arts Council. There are rumours that a cable TV crew will be in attendance. Those of you in witness protection should work on your disguise. Here’s what our own Ms Kelly D is alleged to have said:

Come see Kelly perform this Saturday at the Annual Spinach Festival in lovely Lenexa, Kansas! This is a festival for even the folks who don’t like Spinach! There is a pancake feed in the morning, cane pole fishing for the kids, a calypso band, a sweetpea baby crawling contest, and yes, of course, the world’s largest spinach salad (yummy)! So much to do in one day!

Kelly’s first performance is at noon on the main stage. If that’s too early for you, come to the 4pm show, also on the main stage.

This is an event for the whole family! The event is in Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park at 87th and Lackman. Hope to see you there!

A couple of months ago we played at the KC Highland Games “on the grassy fields of E.H. Young Riverfront Park in Riverside, Missouri” . We moseyed in, followed some bagpipers around, and played a set on a lovely little stage by the river. Here’s what one of the festival organizers had to say:

KELLY! YOU WERE WONDERFUL!! We really thought you were great. Just lovely stuff. I hope you keep working as a group, because you really are traditional and fresh at the same time. Please pass along my congrats to everyone. I was busy when you finished, so I didn’t get to give you a hug, but the four of you were really terrific. The audience was very pleased with you!

The band now has a page on Myspace, soon to be jammed full of friends, links and other juicy stuff. Every time I look there are more people I know on the site. Like you, probably!

Recording goes on!

Hey all! it’s been a while since I’ve brought up the recording. We’ve got several things down and Black is the Colour is almost down. I’m very excited about everything that is happening with the recording! We are recording at Lane Turner’s new studio in Overland Park. It’s on the backside of a strip mall full of Asian restaurants. We all seem to leave hungry! Wonton’s anyone?

Roger Landes will be in town next weekend and is going to lay down a couple of tracks for us. Very excited and feel fortunate to have his talents on this project!

I just spoke to Mike Dugger who is almost home after his 3 week excursion to the East. Some of his time was spent with his mom and cruising the antique shops, too which he told me he found some really cool stuff. The other part was spent at the Swannanoa Gathering, one of the best summer music camps around. He told me he not only got a lot of great music out of it, but he also got a lot of jokes. Some I think I’m afraid to hear!!

Take me home from the ballpark….

We want to thank Bear Goodell and the T-Bones for having us out to the ballpark last night to play. It was a lot of fun. Kelly, Dave and Turlach played on the concourse for 30 minutes before the game beside the booth for the Irish Museum and Cultural Center. Their table was manned by tinwhistle player Sean Kane and his parents, Elizabeth and Tom. Their family hosts ballplayers for the team and it was through them that we got the opportunity to perform. We’d barely tuned up when we spotted our friends Elizabeth Neal and Harold Scott of the Jennifer Ireland foundation walking past. It felt just like home, except with more cotton candy.

After the game started, we popped up onto the dugout for a quick couple of tunes in the middle of the first and second innings. The night contained a lot of firsts for me. First time at a minor league game, first gig at a stadium, first appearance on the big screen, first gig at a sporting event, first time performing before so many people. The T-Bones organization was great, taking lots of opportunities to mention the band, the museum and the music school throughout the evening. It was a privilege for us to be there.

Good to the Bone - Kelly to appear at T-Bones game

A stripped down version of Kelly will make a lightning raid at the T-Bones game this Friday night. Kelly, Dave and Turlach will appear on the field a couple of times between innings at Kansas City’s super NorthernLeague baseball stadium CommunityAmerica park . The stadium is in the Legends complex at the junction of I70 and I435 west of downtown. We’re really excited at the prospect of playing in front of such a big crowd.
