We finally have a rough mix for you to listen to, a version of the powerhouse traditional song Black Is The Colour. And I know that you spell the word color here in the New World, but it’s an Irish song and I’m Irish and you’ll still like the song…I promise.
Hey all! it’s been a while since I’ve brought up the recording. We’ve got several things down and Black is the Colour is almost down. I’m very excited about everything that is happening with the recording! We are recording at Lane Turner’s new studio in Overland Park. It’s on the backside of a strip mall full of Asian restaurants. We all seem to leave hungry! Wonton’s anyone?
Roger Landes will be in town next weekend and is going to lay down a couple of tracks for us. Very excited and feel fortunate to have his talents on this project!
I just spoke to Mike Dugger who is almost home after his 3 week excursion to the East. Some of his time was spent with his mom and cruising the antique shops, too which he told me he found some really cool stuff. The other part was spent at the Swannanoa Gathering, one of the best summer music camps around. He told me he not only got a lot of great music out of it, but he also got a lot of jokes. Some I think I’m afraid to hear!!
Not much progress to report. Most of the usual suspects have been busy, out of town with March gigs. Mike, Mason and Turlach are headed to Tennessee for a while to play in Dollywood.
Well, it’s happened. The CD has finally started the long progress of recording. It’s been 3 weeks now and nothing is complete, but I’m optimistic. I go in on Friday and lay down some vocals for two songs. After that, one more track on each and they should be complete, unless we decide to add additional tracks. So 2 down and 12 to go!!
The first two songs are “Black is the Colour” and “Hired Hands” which is a rewrite of a trad Scottish piece called the “Ploy Boy Lads”. One is a love song of longing and the other is a “poor me” song. You may notice a theme through out my CD and it’s not consciously done, although after the last 2 years of my life I’m sure there is a lot of subconscious rolling around in there. So as a disclaimer, I don’t hate men (they’re better roasting on a stick…haha seriously just kidding here)! And to add to that I am working with some really fantastic men on my CD. I couldn’t have asked for a more talented group of musicians and consider myself lucky they even associate with me.
I’m hoping to have the CD done by June, but with all the gigs that we all do, some of which are taking bits and pieces of us out of town, I’m hoping for August. We’ll see what happens, so keep your fingers crossed!!
